Let’s talk about PRIDE. As you have probably already know it’s Pride month and I wanted to take some time to share my thoughts on the importance of this time. I... know a lot of people just think that it’s about wearing rainbows, turning up the sass and celebrating by joining a parade (of which it is) but there’s a higher purpose to Pride. Pride month occurs to commemorate the Stonewall riots which happened at the end of June in 1969. These events were pivotal in shining a light on the LGBTQIA+ and the need for equal rights / normalising our community. You see, being LGBTQIA (that’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/ally) is still considered ‘different’ or ‘not normal’ and for that reason alone this community is therefore left vulnerable, at risk and not considered equal. Pride isn’t just a parade it’s a call to action. It’s not just for Queer folks to strut their stuff down the middle of the city it’s an invitation to those who consider our bodies and lifestyle as different to realise that our way of being is in fact our normal and therefore should be your normal. It’s an invitation for you to make your little corner of the world loving, accepting and safe. You see most folk who see Pride happening don’t realise there’s a higher purpose in all of this. It’s an opportunity for us to see and accept that LOVE is LOVE and it goes beyond the boundary of body, gender, identity, partnerships and relationships. It’s an opportunity to let our love be boundless and express without boundary. Right now not everyone feels safe and as long as LGBTQIA+ folks don’t feel safe, Pride will continue to have this higher purpose. To my LGBTQIA+ family thank you for being you and for finding the courage to be the LOVE you were born to be. To those who consider themselves an ally, keep doing what you’re doing to welcome our way of being into your world
