Strike: Call of tenders does not justify social dumping! The locomotive drivers are striking in Helsinki on 18th 19th March to protest against government-owned railway company VR's breach of contract and unilateral change of working conditions. VR won the tender for commuter trains in Helsinki area by submitting a low-priced bid, relying on VR's ability to trample on working conditions, established practices and assign work tasks to employees' leisure time. According the F...innish Railway union RAU, after eight months of fruitless negotiations, locomotive drivers are suing VR's various courts, e.g. by mass action. The Finnish legal system gives an employer a unilateral right to reinterpret agreements, leaving employees the only opportunity to protect their rights through unfortunate protests and cumbersome legal proceedings. Train drivers are very disappointed with VR's personnel policy, as VR now pays the price of the low-cost offer to its employees.
