The Nielsen laboratory is pleased to expand on our instrument park and have now ordered a brand new Äkta Pure for all those SEC preps that we need to do :)

and with fall we welcome our new master student Jane Prihodova to the lab. Jane's project work for a degree in biochemistry will mainly focus on molecular interactions traced by microscale thermophoresis. #Nanotemper

Do not miss the opportunity to participate in two related seminars given by PhD students from the Nielsen lab this Wednesday (September 9) at 10:00AM and at 1:00PM, Stockholm Sweden. Anna Edlund will present her pre-dissertation seminar: 'Implications of APOE4-related insulin resistance and glucose hypometabolism in neurodegenerative diseases' 10:00AM, use this link: https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/63592852690... Andreas Giannisis will present his half-time seminar with the title: 'Relevance of a peripheral apolipoprotein E linked phenotype to neurodegeneration' 1:00PM, use this link: https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/64312362149

Fall has arrived to the Stockholm University campus!

The Nielsen lab is very excited to have initiated a new project with Tiago Oliveira at the University of Minho in Portugal, and Columbia University in the US in which we aim to take a very first step towards properly profiling the livers of individuals with different APOE genotypes!

The Nielsen lab has several collaborations with scientists in the states. Each year the Sweden-America Foundation (Sverige-Amerika Stiftelsen) supports graduate, postgraduate and postdocs with funds to go study in the US. Only available to Swedish citizens but we want to promote the opportunity anyway! https://sweamfo.se/stipendier/kontantstipendier/

As the first to defend her thesis from the Nielsen lab Anna Edlund will defend her work in a public defense on May at 14:00. The work includes a total of five works ranging from clinical to in vivo and in vitro studies. Anna's work nicely supports the notion that apolipoprotein E also in the periphery, is of importance to the central nervous system despite being shielded by the blood brain barrier. The public defense will be a digital defense and can be followed via zoom (li...nk below). As the faculty opponent we have Professor Bill Rebeck from Georgetown University, US, and the thesis committee consists of Professors Mia Lindskog and Anna Erlandsson, both at Uppsala University, and Gunnar Gouras at Lund University. The session includes a 20 min talk by the opponent, to position the work in the field, a 20 min summary of the thesis work followed by opposition and questions from the opponent, the committee and last by the public. Welcome to join! https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/66398078579

What a great day, a huge accomplishment for Anna and for the team. So well deserved Anna, congratulations The thesis can be found online "Links between plasma apoE and glucose metabolism, brain insulin signaling, and synaptic integrity : Relevance to Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology"... https://su.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf See more

It's been a while since our last update but work has been ongoing despite the pandemic! Since our last update the Nielsen lab has published one new paper (headed by Anna Edlund): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33814450/ and two more papers are currently undergoing review. With a 'slow' output year last year due to the pandemic the lab is excited to get our work out this year! Stay tuned for updates.

PhD student Anna has this evening submitted her manuscript for publication, fingers crossed! In the study Anna has taken a closer look at why plasma apoE levels may be associated with brain glucose metabolism and gray matter volume without crossing the blood-brain-barrier. Turns out that glucose may be an important player!
