We have now launched our new designer gRAD! GRAD is our answer to the most fundamental flaw in current album designers which is: the lack of a global overview of all spreads. If you have ever designed a reasonably large album, you know that the most difficult task is figuring out which photos belong together, a process that requires a bit of tinkering - especially if you are bound to a fixed number of spreads. With gRAD you can simply drag a photo from one spread to another w...ithout having to drag the photo into an intermediate list of thumbnails while you switch between spreads. We added templates for all of the 21 albums from Extrema Album. This means you can create a new album with one of their pre-defined sizes and thanks to RAD's trim adjustment you should see the trim lines and beautiful layout through design and export (on the server or via the Photoshop-script).

Some exiting news... soon you will be able to send your order directly from within the export dialogue to selected album manufacturers. Another BIG step forward. Design, client-proofing, client-gallery and ordering all under one roof... You will love it!

Everyone likes positive feedback, so do we. This weeks highlight was send to us by one of the album manufacturers offering a white label version of RAD to their clients. This is what one of their clients felt when he was introduced to RAD:

Today we introduced the new "Gallery" feature which lets you share a gallery of the album photos with your client. They can click on the photos they wish to order and you will then be able to see which ones they have chose in the designer. It also works the other way, so if you have created spreads, the gallery marks the photos used in the album with a star. RAD Update: (1) The Designer window is more responsive and you will notice that the whole browser window is used and that the photo thumbnails grow accordingly, which is beneficial to those of you with enormous screens. (2) There's a new Replace button to swap a photo with another. This will be embellished later with a direct upload button. (3) The font selection menu in the text tool has been replaced by a fly-out menu to deal with a Firefox and Explorer problem. After several false starts and almost 4 weeks of toiling at the computer with many sheets of note paper filled with lines and numbers, hundreds of little test programs executed and a couple of thumbs twiddling away whilst waiting for Photoshop to render a font we are finally back again, with the information that we did launch the text tool in RAD. Getting text to work has been a real research effort. After all this time you are probably expecting something supercalifragilisti...cexpialidocious but it is still just a simple text tool so that you can put some letters in your photo albums. Why did it take so long? Text is rendered differently in HTML, HTML5 canvas, Photoshop and ImageMagick. In our previous attempt, Kjell assumed that HTML5's middle-of-the-font line was half the height of an "M" but it was discovered that this metric, called the x-height, is not only slightly different (and varies with each font) but also something which you can't query in Photoshop. So Kjell had to employ some clever HTML tricks to calculate the x-height in the designer and pass it on to the Photoshop script. The second problem came up when we discovered that about half of the fonts on my Mac don't exist in Windows. We now have a common set of fonts that everyone should have, and also a number of Google fonts which can be used for free. If you export spreads on the server, you don't have to do anything, but if you use one of the Google fonts and wish to run the Photoshop script to build your spreads, you must first download the Google fonts and install them on your computer. Just a short one today, days before we are finally lounchings the text tool... I found a new motto for the professional side of my life: "Fast, Cheap, Good - pick two and I will give you a quote" Some things just take time to get them right. All honour to Kjell for putting hundreds of hours work into the text-tool .

Several companies approached us in the past month and liked to know more about the option of getting there own white label version of RAD. Especially companies lite Bindit who are targeting the high end consumer market asked if it was possible to integrate a simple text editor into the online designer. So now it´s time for the next free update. If all goes well you will be able to enjoy the option to add text to your layout when you log in tomorrow. This seemingly simple task needed some deep diving into the original code... so its time to wish us luck. Save your projects and hold your thumbs!
